Because most people who can't afford a lawyer arr appointed a public defender. And alot of people don't know that they can fire their pubic defender just like u can a paid lawyer. And most of the time it's like of knowledge. You can also write the judge from inside the jail as well on your behalf in the meantime while serving your time.
